Grant Application Procedure

All requests in the form of a Letter of Intent should be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on the specified Letter of Intent submission date in the Navajo United Way office, (see calendar) or post marked no later than 24 hours prior to the Letter of Intent submission date. Applicants should limit submission to no more than two letters of intent no longer than one page each.

Letter of Intent

Letter of Intent should be one (1) typed page, no smaller than 12pt font size and contain the following information:

  1. A brief description of the project or services needing support
  2. Address and phone number for the project contact person
  3. Starting and ending dates of project or services
  4. Amounts requested
  5. Total project cost or cost to cover service delivery
  6. Who will be served
  7. Who will manage the project
  8. What geographic area will be served
  9. Expected results
  10. How do you meet 3 of the criteria in each of the areas for consideration

Applicants will be notified of the status of their Letter of Intent in writing (see calendar). At that time applicants whose letters of intent meets Navajo United Way, Inc. criteria will be requested to submit a grant application.

The application will be mailed to you later by the Navajo United Way, Inc. with a final submission date for return of 10 copies of the proposal application indicated.

Do not miss submission dates, exceed page limitations, or send unsolicited attachments. Unsolicited attachments will be discarded. Applicants who do not follow the guidelines will not be accepted for review in this year and will need to reapply for future years' consideration.

Please note that the Navajo United Way is sensitive to varying levels of experience in applying for grants. What you are trying to accomplish is more important than the sophistication of the proposal application.

Grant Size

The Navajo United Way, Inc. will fund requests for projects or services up to $15,000. Successive years' funding for a project will be considered. The average grant is $5,000.

Eligibility

Organizations applying to the Navajo United Way, Inc. must qualify under the 501(c)3 tax exempt section of the Internal Revenue Code or have a qualified 501(c)3 fiscal agent.

Who May Apply
  • Informal groups who have come together for specific projects or service delivery
  • Emerging grassroots groups or organizations with applications for nonprofit status is pending
  • Formal nonprofit organizations which have delivered services to Navajo Nation residents on an on-going basis
Ineligibility
  • Individuals or sponsorship of individuals to engage in academic pursuits, athletic events, healing ceremonies, retreats or pageant competitions
  • Programs or Services which duplicate the responsibilities of the federal, state, tribal or local government
  • Campaigns to elect public officials
  • Class trips
  • Religious organizations for religious purposes
  • Projects that take place before the completion of the grant making process
